Dons are Class 1-A Duals State Champions!
By Ken Thoma

A lot of things were uncertain this past wrestling season with the COVID-19 virus and so many interrupted wrestling schedules, but the Dons of Don Bosco stayed true to the course and came away with the top trophy when they beat arch-rival Lisbon on a glorious Wednesday (Feb. 17) in Des Moines.

After beating Missouri Valley 71-4 and then West Sioux 71-12, it would be a battle with Lisbon who had 10 ranked wrestlers. The championship matches were started at the 152# weight and the Don’s head coach, Tom Hogan, made a strategic, brilliant move by moving up the Dons 145# Cael Rahnavardi up a weight. Cael responded with a stunning 4-1 upset over Lincoln Holub of Lisbon.

Cael Frost then did his thing, with a 15-0 technical fall over Matt Kohl, which was followed by Cade Tenold beating Max Kohl by 7-4. The Dons then won the next two matches with Carson Tenold beating Jamien Moore 21-6 and Cedric Yoder eking out a 1-0 upset win over Truman Krob to give the Dons a 19-0 point lead.

Although the Lisbon Lions did win the next two matches, they then gave up 12 points to the Dons when Caleb Coffin got a quick pin in 32 seconds followed by a Lisbon forfeit to give the Dons a 31-7 lead.

Although Lisbon won the next three matches, it was Michael McClelland who came to the rescue for Don Bosco, when he also moved up a weight and came away with an 8-3 victory over Indy Harbaugh to give the Dons an insurmountable lead of 34-19 with one match to go – which the Dons forfeited, but they still won 34-25.
