Dale A. “Arch” Shannon
Private Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10:30 a.m. - Friday, October 16, 2020, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Gilbertville, IA, with con-celebrants Rev. Henry P. Huber and Rev. Lloyd E. Reuter assisted by Deacon Kevin Hagarty. Burial was at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Raymond, IA. Honorary pall bearer was Austin Thome; pall bearers were Zach Thome, Megan Thome, Jake Thome, Travis Havel, Shannon Havel, Lewis Havel, Emma Shannon, Sydney Shannon, and Kate Shannon. Military rites were conducted by Nugent-Demuth American Legion Post #714. The funeral service was livestreamed to the public via the church’s Facebook page. Public visitation was 4:00 – 7:00 pm, Thursday, October 15 at White Funeral Home, Jesup, IA, where there was parish rosary at 4:00 p.m. led by Marian Woods. Masks and social distancing were required.
Dale Archie Shannon was born November 9, 1935, at rural Fairbank, IA, the son of Daniel Vernon Shannon and Veronica Edith (Weber) Shannon. He graduated from Immaculate Conception Catholic High School, Fairbank, with the class of 1953. After working for a short time, he joined the United States Army, and proudly served his country until 1958. During his time of service, he worked as a supply sergeant, building bridges in Germany. On November 26, 1959, he was united in marriage to Dorothy Marie Wellner. Dale worked as a police officer in Waterloo for 25+ years, retiring as a sergeant. He was a member of the Nugent – Demuth American Legion Post #714 of Gilbertville, AMVETS Post #31 of Evansdale, IA, and St. Joseph Catholic Church in Raymond.
Dale loved to watch his grandchildren play sports. He also liked to fish, camp, and play cards. He was proud of his Irish heritage and enjoyed coffee with the guys.
Dale is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Dorothy (Wellner) Shannon of Raymond, IA; 3 daughters, Laurie (Mark) Marreel of Rochester, MN, Vickie (Irv) Thome of Raymond, IA, Brenda (Todd) Havel of Raymond, IA; 1 son, Brian (Gia) Shannon of Waterloo, IA; 9 grandchildren Zach (Marissa), Megan, Jake, Travis, Shannon, Lewis, Emma, Sydney, and Kate; 1 great-grandchild, Austin; and 2 sisters, Colleen Bovy of Fairbank, IA, and Marian (Pat) Woods of Jesup, IA. He was preceded in death by his parents; and 2 brothers, Daniel Shannon and Patrick Shannon.
Memorials will be directed to Bosco Catholic Schools, Cedar Valley Catholic Schools, and Cedar Valley Hospice.
