James A. Smith
James was born on August 6, 1939, in Cedar Rapids, NE, the son of Alfred G and Doris M. (Close) Smith. He attended the West High School in Waterloo, IA and enlisted into the United States Navy in 1956. During his time in the Navy, he married Jeaneene Kremmerer in 1958, and they had three children together. They were later divorced. After his discharge from the Navy he moved back to Waterloo, IA and worked as a machinist for John Deere for several years. He later married Sandi Pelton, and they had four children together. Sandi died of a sudden illness. James left John Deere and started his own gas station and tire repair shop called Smitty’s Standard in Waterloo. His business was successful for several years until the gas shortage in the late seventies, and, like many other small gas stations, James had to close his business. He later went on to work for the Illinois Central Railroad, and traveled throughout Iowa.
He is survived by his children; Juleene (Greg) Hasty, Joy (David) Glover, Allen (Annette) Bensen, Jim Smith, Jeff Smith, Abby Smith, and Bob Smith, eight grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, three sisters; Maryann (Gene) Cunningham, Pat (Dick) Horne, and Peggy (Vic) Pinckney, and many nieces and nephews.
James is preceded in death by his parents, Alfred and Doris Smith, and his second wife, Sandi Pelton.
