Jesup starts football season strong
Jesup started its football season opener with an explosive win, taking down the previous year’s Class A state champion Hudson in a 7-5 victory on Aug. 30 at the Hudson field. It was a significant change from the previous year’s early season match-up where the Class 1A J-Hawks fell to the Pirates 8-46.

Jesup’s touchdown came from a fourth down play in the second quarter where quarterback Jake Pilcher threw a pass to Brodie Kresser. The extra point was scored by Cole Oberbroeckling.

Defensively, the team shined with three interceptions by Kresser and sacks from Oberbroeckling, Jerret Delagardelle, and Keaton Roscovious. Tanner Cole also had a fumble recovery.

The opening game was one of three 1-0 victories since 2007.

Against Oelwein

Jesup played its first home game of the season against 2A Oelwein on Sept. 6. Oelwein led 8-0 at the end of the first quarter. Jase Pilcher was the first to score for Jesup, on a 6-yard rush in the second quarter.

Tanner Cole completed a 14-yard run for the team’s second touchdown, putting Jesup ahead before the close of the second. Oelwein turned the tables in the third, scoring the only touchdowns of the quarter and moving the game 21-13.

In the fourth quarter, Cooper Fuelling scored on a receiving pass. Brodie Kresser caught the ball in a two-yard catch at the close of the fourth, scoring Jesup’s final touchdown and closing out the game 33-27 in Oelwein’s favor. Overall, Cole Oberbroeckling scored three of his four extra point attempts.

Jesup moves on to play their second home game against MFL Mar-Mac this Friday, Sept. 13.
