J-Hawks sweep home tourney, battle on the roadJesup volleyball opened its season in New Hampton in a triangular vs. New Hampton and Nashua-Plainfield on Aug. 27. Jesup took a 0-3 loss against the home team but came back for a 3-0 victory against Nashua-Plainfield in the second game. The team scored six aces and had 22 kills, 15 blocks, and 21 digs overall.
Jesup took on five competitors in a weekend tournament held at Cascade High School on Aug. 31. The J-Hawks won three of its five games overall, including three 2-0 sweeps against Central Elkader, East Buchanan, and Central City. The team faced loses against the tournament opener and home team Cascade as well as the metro team Waterloo East. In both games, Jesup fell 1-2, taking narrow victories in their first sets (23-21 Cascade) (21-17 Waterloo East) before being overcome in the final two rounds.
Against Clayton Ridge and Maquoketa Valley
Jesup hosted a triangular against Clayton Ridge and Maquoketa Valley for its first home game of the season. The team took down both teams, finishing 2-0 in both matches.
In its opening match against Clayton Ridge, Jesup came out ahead 25-18 and dominated their opponents again in the second with a 25-9 win. Overall, the team had 21 kills.
Leah Becker, Jenna Jensen, and Bobbi Thomas led with five kills each. Kendra McCombs was just behind with four. McCombs, Thomas, and Jamie Thoma each had one block. Alexis Harris had 18 of the team’s 19 assists. Aces were scored by McCombs (two), Caelor Wymore (two), and Brittany Lingenfelter (one).
Jesup overcame Maquoketa Valley 25-15 in its first set. Maquoketa Valley came back fighting in the second. Jesup was able to overcome their opponents by just two points, taking the game 26-24. The J-Hawks landed four aces: three by Jacie Lange and another by Alexis Harris. The team had eight blocks in total including six solo blocks and two block assists.
