Hazardous waste disposal day Saturday at Jesup
Do you have hazardous household waste that needs disposal? The City of Jesup is offering a special Household Hazardous Waste Disposal day here on Saturday, Oct. 13 from 8:30 AM to 10:30 AM. The drop-off location will be the Farmers Day vacant lot next to The Farmers Wife and across Young Street from the Boy Scout Shelter in the Land-o-Corn park.

Drop off hours will be limited to 8:30 to 10:30 that morning according to Public Works Director Mike Fettkether.
Fettkether noted that hazardous wastes can be found throughout the home.

“Look for labels on items with words like, DANGER, WARNING, or CAUTION,” he said. “Look in the kitchen, bathroom, basement and garage for potential hazardous waste that can be disposed of safely by the city for you.”

There is no charge to drop off hazardous waste on this special disposal day in Jesup.

The following items will be accepted:

PAINTS: Oil paints, latex paints, stains, varnishes, aerosols

PAINT RELATED: Thinners, caulks, glues & adhesives, solvents, strippers, aerosol products

HOUSEHOLD: Cleaning products, beauty products, pool chemicals, poisons & acids, roofing products, small batteries, fluorescent bulbs

AUTO: Used oil & filters, transmission & brake fluids, engine degreasers, gasoline, kerosene, lighter fluid, anti-freeze, auto batteries, waxes & polishes

LAWN: Herbicides, insecticides, ferilizers, bug sprays
Items NOT accepted, will include: tires, TVs and computer monitors, computers & printers, construction materials, garbage and furniture.

“Proper disposal of these and any other hazardous waste is important to the safety of your family and household pets, as well as the quality of our environment,” Fettkether said. “Please reduce the risk of accidental poisonings, fires and toxic fumes by properly disposing of such materials. Never dispose of hazardous chemicals directly into your garbage or into the waterways.”

The City of Jesup will transport all items collected on the disposal day to the Buchanan County Household Hazardous Waste Center. Anyone who misses the Jesup collection times may dispose of their hazardous waste by contacting the Buchanan County facility directly and by following the rules listed below.
