Eugene M. Schmit
Gilbertville – Eugene M. Schmit, 96 years old of Rosewood Estates in Waterloo, IA, and formerly of Gilbertville, IA, died Saturday, September 8, 2018, at his home.

Funeral services were at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, September 13, 2018, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Gilbertville with Fr. Henry P. Huber as celebrant. Fr. Lloyd Reuter con-celebrated. Music was by Sue Davis, organist; Carol Jordan, soloist and the Resurrection Choir. Casket bearers were Brian McClain, Sean McClain, Derek Schmit, Cole Schmit, Mitchell Schmit, Austin Schmit, Tyler Schmit and Jesse Hahn. Burial was at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Gilbertville. Visitation was from 3–7 p.m., Wednesday, September 12 at the White Funeral Home, Jesup, IA, where there was a 4 p.m., Catholic Order of Foresters Rosary. Visitation continued for an hour before services Thursday at the church.

Eugene Martin Schmit was born January 15, 1922, at home on the family farm, located in Fox Township of Black Hawk County, IA, the son of Valentine Schmit and Matilda (Mangrich) Schmit. On November 12, 1960, he was united in marriage to Beverly Mae Takin in Waterloo. He was a lifelong member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, a member of Catholic Order of Foresters, and the Knights of Columbus.

Eugene is survived by two daughters, Angela McClain of Ames, Carla (Curt) Chorpening of Rowley; two sons, Dana (Becky) Schmit of Jesup, Thomas Schmit of Denver; one daughter-in-law, Brenda Schmit of Elk Run Heights; 11 grandchildren, Brian (Sue) McClain, Sean McClain, Derek Schmit, Cole Schmit, Kayla (Jesse) Hahn, Tucker Chorpening, Mitchell (Jill) Schmit, Austin Schmit, Olivia Schmit, Tyler Schmit, Alexis Schmit; one sister, Laurene Weiers of Phoenix, AZ; two sisters-in-law, Marcella Schmit of Gilbertville and Mary Lou Schmit of Waterloo. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; two sons, Charles Ray Schmit and Patrick Michael Schmit; one grandson, Dillon Charles Schmit; one son-in-law, Mike McClain; five sisters, Martina Schmit in infancy, Marcella Sadler, Irma Kresser, Viola Frost and Agatha Thome; and five brothers, Lawrence, Arnold, Irvin, Edwin and Cletus Schmit.

Eugene attended Fox Township School and then Immaculate Conception School in Gilbertville. He then began farming with his father at a young age and later purchased his own farm in 1964. He retired from farming in 1987. He enjoyed the outdoors, Cubs baseball and bowling, but his church and family were most important. Time spent with his children and grandchildren held a special place in his heart.
