Football schedule announced, program undergoes changes next season
The 2018 and 2019 football seasons were recently announced by the Iowa High School Athletic Association (IHSAA). In January, the IHSAA Board of Control completed its biannual review of football districts.

A ninth district has been added to class 1-A, 2-A, and 3-A. Class 1-A team Jesup has moved to the sixth district and will compete against all new teams from the previous year’s district grouping: Dike-New Hartford, East Marshall, North Linn, Regina, and South Hardin.

Don Bosco, who competes in the 8-player class, will now play in district two. The Dons will continue to play Dunkerton and Tripoli as they did in the previous year but have added Janesville, North Iowa, Northwood-Kensett, Riceville, and Rockford to their district.

The IHSAA has determined that the road to state will change. Beginning in the 2018 season, only the district champion will automatically qualify for playoffs. The remainder, IHSAA has determined, will be based on a rating system. The Ratings Percentage Index (RPI) is based on three criteria: the team’s winning percentage, the opponent’s composite winning percentage, and the opponents’ opponents’ composite winning percentage. The IHSAA states that the RPI system, which is currently being used in various men’s and women’s NCAA sports, has the advantage of being transparent and accurate.

For class 1-A, 2-A, and 3-A, each team will play five district games and four non-district games. For 8-player, each team will play eight district games and two non-district games. All regular season games will be counted toward the RPI calculation.

As in the past, sixteen teams will make it to playoffs. Jesup head coach Jason Sullivan says the goal for his team continues to be the same: to be one of those teams. “Next season we will face some teams we have never played before and some we have,” Sullivan said. “Regardless of the teams we play or how many teams make the playoffs, our team’s mission remains the same: W.I.L Power. That is Winning In Life through doing the rights things on and off the field and making our community a better place.”
