Jesup City Hall Citizens Committee - July 16, 2008

July 23rd, 2008

The Jesup City Hall Citizens Committee met on Wednesday, July 16, 2008, in the Jesup Public Library Community Room. Committee Chairman Merritt Jones called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. by stating that the meeting would be an informal meeting.

The meeting was called to discuss the basic look and size of the new City Hall building. The first item discussed was the basic look of the building. The architects from Gardner Architecture had drawn up preliminary drawings of the exterior and interior of the building, which were reviewed by the committee members. Members of the committee felt that the exterior of the building should match the library. The materials for constructing the roof were also discussed.

The second item discussed was the size of the building. The total cost of the building and the impact that it would have on the tax payers was discussed. The committee also talked about looking for other sources to help fund the building project. Gardner Architecture felt that our grant opportunities were limited.

There was a motion and a second to recommend to the Jesup City Council to accept the concept for the City Hall Building. All voted aye and the Chairman declared the motion passed.

There was also discussion about presenting the concept to the public. The local organizations that would allow the committee to come and present the concept to them were discussed. There was also discussion about doing a public meeting with a soup or sandwich supper or ice cream social.

The next meeting will be July 28, 2008 at 7:00 p.m. at the Jesup Public Library Community Room. Each member of the committee is asked to come up with at least five ideas to be used in the presentation for the public.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:30 p.m.

A Message From Committee Chairman Merritt Jones

December 23rd, 2007

I have been reflecting over the past week about our last committee meeting. While it may seem that no tangible progress was made I believe that valuable insights can be derived from the discussion that will aid in our further narrowing of the focus of the group’s deliberations. We are still in a brainstorming mode and my hope has been that we could explore every possibility that could serve the needs of the community in a larger sense than just providing city office space. Very often, institutions end up in physical environs not because they were ideal but because it was available at the time. In this particular case the city was offered a good price on the current (or recently passed) city hall that met the immediate needs of the city. It may have not met all of the needs of the city but it got the city offices out of a clearly inadequate facility. We have an opportunity at this time to build a facility that will meet other needs of the city if they exist. Of course, the possibility exists that the only needs of the City that need to be addressed by this project is to provide space for the operations that were contained in the old building. If that is the case, I am confident that our process will lead us to that conclusion. The important matter for us is that we keep our minds open to all of the possibilities that may exist. As we work through the needs of the city and desires of the citizens we will eliminate those ideas that don’t satisfy our needs. Read the rest of this entry »
