Don Bosco girls win two in Conference

Wins came easier last week for the Don Bosco Girls Basketball team, as the Dons won two games in Iowa Star Conference play.

On Feb. 1, Don Bosco handled the Dunkerton Raiders easily by the score of 66-16 in a make-up conference game at Dunkerton. Don Bosco scored 13 points in the first quarter, and added 12 points in the second quarter. In the second half, the Dons scored 16 points in the third quarter, and really blitzed the Lady Raiders with 25 points in the final quarter.

Allison Rottinghaus led Don Bosco in scoring with 20 points and 11 rebounds, for another double-double. She added 2 assists, 2 steals, and 2 blocked shots.

Jenn Ortner followed with 11 points, 9 rebounds, an assist, a steal, and a block. Leah Rottinghaus scored 8 points to go along with 4 rebounds, 3 assists, and 8 steals.

Taylor Even had 9 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists, and 4 steals. Cate Paulsen added 7 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists, a steal, and a blocked shot. Kyndal Gardner also had 7 points and an assist.

Julia Monat and Melissa Ament scored 2 points each. Julia added 5 rebounds, 4 assists, and 2 steals. Melissa had 3 rebounds, an assist and a blocked shot. Olivia Rigdon had a rebound, an assist, and a steal.

On Feb. 2, Don Bosco lost to North Tama by the score of 41-26, in a conference game played at Gilbertville. North Tama is a tall, and rugged team, and the Redhawks were able to shut the Don Bosco offense down for the game.

Don Bosco scored 14 points in the first half, and the Dons managed just 12 points in the second half.

Jenn Ortner led Don Bosco in scoring with 10 points, 8 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 blocked shots. Allsion Rottinghaus followed with 6 points, 9 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals, and 2 blocked shots.

Leah Rottinghaus scored 4 points to go along with 3 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 steals. Julia Monat and Melissa Ament scored 3 points each. Julia had 5 rebounds, 3 assists, and a steal, while Melissa had 3 rebounds, an assist, and a block.

Taylor Even and Cate Paulsen did not score, but they had a good floor game each. Taylor had 5 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 steals. Cate had 5 rebounds, an assist, and a steal.

For the game, Don Bosco was just 8 for 55 from the field for the game, which is 14.5%. The Dons were 50% from the charity stripe, and the team did garner 40 rebounds for the game.

On Feb. 5, Don Bosco snatched away a 46-44 victory over the GMG Wolverines in a conference game played at Gilbertville.

Leah Rottinghaus had probably her best night of scoring for the season with 14 points. She added 6 rebounds, an assist, and a steal. Leah accounted for 7 points personally, and a key assist in the all-important fourth quarter to help boost the Dons to the win.

Don Bosco led 12-11 at the end of the first quarter, and the game was tied at halftime at 22-22. At the end of third quarter, the game was still tied at 33-33. The Dons were able to stave off the Wolverines’ Tara Gray, as she is dangerous from any place on the court. She is an excellent 3-pointer shooter, and she can drive the basket. Gray led GMG with 18 points.

Allison Rottinghaus followed her sister Leah, with 9 points, 6 rebounds, an assist, 5 steals, and 2 blocks. Allison had a key block and steal, as she virtually leaped nearly four feet straight up to stop a Wolverine possession in the closing moments of the game.

Jenn Ortner and Taylor Even scored 7 points each. Jenn had 8 rebounds, an assist, and a steal. Taylor had a rebound, 2 assists, and a steal.

Julia Monat had 5 points, 2 rebounds, an assist, and a steal, as her personal play continues to improve. Cate Paulsen added 4 points, 2 rebounds, an assist, and a steal.

Don Bosco is now 10-12 overall, and 8-9 in Iowa Star Conference play.
The Dons played at Tripoli, on Feb. 9, in the final regular season game. Don Bosco will face E. B. at Winthrop, in the first round of the Class 1A Girls Regional Tournament, on Thursday, Feb. 11, at 7 PM.
