Lady J-Hawks take third in home invitational
By Annika Wall

The J-Hawk softball team went 5-1, upset 11th ranked Highland, Riverside and took third at their home invitational during the week of June 4.

Rhianna Bigwood pitched against the Sumner-Fredericksburg Cougars, who took an early 3-0 lead. However, the J-Hawks tied it up in the bottom of the third. Even though Jesup had no stolen bases, they had six extra base hits with a double from Emily Treptow, triples by Rhianna Bigwood and Annika Wall and home runs from Annika Wall, Alexus Jensen and Kristin Sadler.

Andrea Gibbs drove in the winning run. With bases loaded and two outs in a tied ball game, Gibbs was hit by a pitch to make the final score of 11-10. From the mound, Rhianna Bigwood struck out six batters and only allowed one earned run.

The next day, the J-Hawks traveled an hour and a half to face Highland of Riverside, who was ranked 11th in class 2A. The game went back and forth with Highland matching or exceeding every run Jesup scored until the J-Hawks drove in four runs in the top of the fifth, giving Jesup a 7-4 lead.

Both teams held each other until the J-Hawks added a lone run in the top of the seventh, creating the final score of 8-4. Jesup had 10 hits as a team, while Alexus Jensen and Rhianna Bigwood had two each. Bigwood only allowed eight hits and struck out two throughout the night.
