Dons qualified for State Baseball Tourney

Clay Welter cracked a 3-run home run to lead the Don Bosco Baseball team to a thrilling come-from-behind 8-6 win over the Lisbon Lions July 20, in Winthrop.
With the victory, Don Bosco advanced to the Class 1A Boys State Baseball Tournament at Principal Park in Des Moines.
The Dons (33-1) faced Preston (23-10) in the first round or quarter-final game on Saturday, July 24.
Lisbon led early by a 3-0 margin. Don Bosco tied the game in the fourth inning on run-scoring singles by Austin Schmit and Nick Rosauer, and a sacrifice fly by Cole Welter.
Lisbon responded in the fourth with two more runs and a 5-3 advantage.
Clay Welter hit his dramatic home run in the top of the sixth inning, to give Don Bosco a 6-5 lead. The Dons added two runs in the seventh for an 8-5 lead.
Nick Rosauer tripled for Don Bosco. Brandon Delagardelle singled Nick home. Brandon Welter drew a bases-loaded walk to plate the final run for the Dons.
Lisbon scored a single run the final inning, but the Lions fell short at 8-6.
Don Bosco Head Coach Corey Carlson said, “We were a little flat to start out the game, but the team overcame adversity once again as they have all year.”
He continued, “We had a dream to get to state again this year. I could not be more proud of these guys, as they went after the dreams we have been striving for all year long.”
Brandon Delagardelle pitched the win for Don Bosco. He went 5 innings, allowed 7 hits, 2 earned runs, and he struck out 3 batters.
Cole Welter relieved for 2 innings for the Dons. He allowed an earned run and struck out 4 batters for the save.
As a team, Don Bosco banged out 13 hits. The team received 5 bases on balls and a hit batter.
Nate Springer had 4 singles in 5 trips to the plate to lead the Dons. Cole Welter, Austin Schmit, and Nick Rosauer were 2 for 4 each at the plate, and each player drove in a run.
Cole had a double, and Nick had a triple.
Clay Welter blasted a homer to drive in 3 runs. Brandon Welter and Brandon Delagardelle had the other hits for Don Bosco. They drove in a run each.
Don Bosco was shaky in the field committing 5 errors, but the Dons overcame their mistakes to take the game.
