North Iowa Juvenile Detention Center escape thwarted Mar. 6

At approximately 7:55 PM on March 6, Deputies from the Black Hawk County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to an assault in progress at the North Iowa Juvenile Detention Center on Dunkerton Road in rural Black Hawk County.

Upon arrival, it was determined that a total of four juveniles had assaulted and overtaken a staff member, obtained his keys and exited the facility, escaping from custody.

The four juveniles were identified as 15-year-old Carmeshia Shanita Veneable of Waterloo (detained on charges Robbery 2nd Degree and Theft in the 4th Degree; 16-year-old Trae Devon Todd-Ellis of Waterloo, detained on charges of Robbery 2nd, Interference with Official Acts, and Sale/Manufacturing of Schedule 5 Substance; 16-year-old Jahtyriits Swington of Waterloo, detained on charges of Aggravated Assault; and 17-year-old Colton Lee Thelien of Mason City, detained on charges of Burglary 2nd Degree x2 and Possession of Burglar’s Tools and Theft 4th.

All four were located by law enforcement within one hour of the escape and are currently pending new charges of allegedly Escaping from Custody and Assault While Participating in a Felony.

The Black Hawk County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Cedar Falls Police Department, Iowa State Patrol, and the Waterloo Police Department and Waterloo Police K-9.
