Senior Shawn Even smashed two home runs, added a single and drove in six runs to lead the Jesup High Baseball team to a 9-8 victory over NU High of Cedar Falls last Friday night.
The NICL (East) Conference game was played at Jesup on June 13.
NU High struck first with four big runs in the very first inning.
However, Jesup responded with three runs in the bottom of the first. With one out, Ethan Pelton singled and Joe Rohlfsen singled. Shawn Even then cracked the first of his two homers to bring the J-Hawks back within one run.
The Panthers kept the pressure on with four additional runs in the next two innings, but the J-Hawks stayed right in the game with four additional runs as well.
The score stood 8-7 after three innings in favor of NU High.
Jesup would score two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, as Joe Rohlfsen tripled after running the count to 3-2. Shawn Even then hit his second homer of the night for the final margin of victory.
Troy Detweiler started on the mound for Jesup and was credited with the complete game win.
In addition to the hitting heroics of Even, Ethan Pelton was 2 for 3 at the plate with a run batted in.
Joe Rohlfsen was 2 for 4, and Troy Detweiler was 1 for 3.
In earlier action last week, Jesup played BCLUW at Beaman in a non-conference affair.
The Comets defeated Jesup 14-12 in a high scoring affair.
Jesup actually out hit BCLUW 12-9, but the Jesup pitchers allowed 10 walks and hit two batters.
Jesup Head Coach Bruce Wall remarked, “We had three errors in addition to
those walks, and you simply can’t give a team 15 base runners in a game.”
Each team scored 3 runs in the first inning. Jesup added 2 runs in the second inning, and the Comets tied the game at 5-5 in the third inning.
BCLUW scored nine runs in the next three innings, to offset five runs that the J-Hawks scored in the fifth inning.
Max Faulkner started pitching for Jesup and took the loss. Trevor Lough came on in relief.
Shawn Even continued his hot hitting by going 3 for 4 at the plate. He drove in 2 runs.
Ethan Pelton was 2 for 2, Matt Mattson was 2 for 5, and Tyler Frush was 1 for 3 with a double.
On June 10, Jesup used 10 hits, 2 errors, and walks, to explode for 13 runs on Aplington-Parkersburg in the very first inning to down the Falcons 15-4 in five innings.
The non-conference game was played at Jesup.
The Falcons are an emotionally, mentally, and physically depleted team from the aftermath of the terrible tornado that hit the Parkersburg area on May 25.
A-P will play their baseball season however.
For all practical purposes the game was decided in the first inning.
Brady Mattson started on the mound for Jesup, and pitched the entire game for the win.
Ethan Pelton led Jesup at the plate by going 3 for 3. Troy Detweiler was 2 for 3, and he had a double.
Matt Mattson was also 2 for 3 with a triple. Joe Rohlfsen went 2 for 4. Matt Mostek was 1 for 3, and he crushed a home run.
On June 10, Jesup played a conference game with Union at La Porte City.
Union won 2-1 in a finely played game.
Jesup scored their only run in the fourth inning. Union scored a single run in the sixth inning, and scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning to grab the win.
Joe Rohlfsen pitched the entire game for Jesup and took the heartbreaking loss. He allowed 9 hits, and the J-Hawks played errorless ball behind him.
Jesup is now 8-8 overall for the season, and 2-3 in NICL (East) Conference play.
The J-Hawks will play Dike-New Hartford at Dike on Thursday, June 19. |
