Good solid play continues to be the theme of play for the Dunkerton Girls’ Softball team.
The Raiders just completed a tournament at Vinton-Shellsburg in Vinton, on Saturday, June 7.
Dunkerton won the first game of the invite 3-2 over Belle Plaine, by coming from behind with 3 runs in the seventh inning to grab the victory.
Belle Plaine had scored single runs in the fourth and fifth innings to hold a 2-0 lead going into the seventh inning.
Brenna Hesse pitched the win for the Raiders by striking out 9 batters. She allowed 4 hits, and walked 4.
Dunkerton bunched 4 hits in a row, with the bottom part of the batting order doing the damage.
Sarah Waskow, Ashley Duncan, Danica Delong, and Kayla Stafford were the ones that got the job done for the Raiders, with Stafford knocking in the winning run.
Dunkerton had 9 hits for the game.
Danica Delong and Kayla Stafford led the Raiders by going 2 for 3 at the plate each. Danielle Graham and Sarah Waskow were 1 for 2 for the game.
In the final game of the day, Vinton-Shellsburg defeated Dunkerton 5-1. The Vikings scored single runs in the second, third, and fourth innings, and a pair of runs in the sixth inning to clinch the victory.
Dunkerton scored a single run in the fourth inning. The Raiders out-hit V-S, but they couldn’t score the runs needed.
Megan Joens opened the game with single, and stole second base. Kayla Waskow then smashed what appeared to be a home run, but the Umpire ruled the hit a foul ball, and that call set the tone for the game.
Dunkerton Coach Gene Groen said, “It was definitely a homer, and the Vinton-Shellsburg Coach agreed after the game, but the call by the Umpire stood.
Danica Delong started on the mound for the Raiders, with Brenna Hesse coming on in relief.
In games last week, Dunkerton blanked the North Tama Redhawks 8-0, in an Iowa Star Conference game played in Traer on June 2.
Brenna Hesse pitched the shutout for the Raiders, and struck out 6 batters.
Dunkerton scored runs in six of the seven innings for the game.
Danielle Graham led the Raiders hitting attack by going 3 for 5 at the plate with a triple.
Ashley Duncan was 2 for 4 with a double. Kayla Waskow was 2 for 4 with a double and a stolen base.
Sarah Waskow was 2 for 5 with a double and a stolen base, and Jenna Nagel was 2 for 5.
Dunkerton lost a tight 2-1 game with GMG at Garwin on June 4.
The Raiders out hit the Wolverines 6 to 3, but Dunkerton couldn’t bunch their hits when they needed to.
The Raiders had four different opportunities with runners in scoring position.
Brenna Hesse started for the Raiders and pitched three innings. Danica Delong pitched the final four innings.
Megan Joens led the Raiders at the plate by 2 for 4 with a stolen base. Ashley Duncan was 1 for 2 with a double, and Sarah Waskow was 1 for 3 with 2 stolen bases.
GMG scored their two runs in the first inning, and Dunkerton scored their single run in the fifth inning.
In conference action in late May, Dunkerton defeated Clarksville 8-2, and edged Tripoli 13-12 in a wild game.
Dunkerton defeated host Hudson 8-3 in the opening game of the Hudson Invitational Tournament on May 31.
The Raiders then lost 8-6 to Nashua-Plainfield, and to Iowa Star Conference rival Janesville 5-3 in the third place game.
Dunkerton is now 8-5 overall for the season, and 3-2 in conference play.
The eight wins equal the same number of wins that the team posted last season.
The Raiders are in the midst of another busy week.
On June 9 the team played CAL at Alexander, Iowa, and on June 10 the Raiders played Don Bosco at Gilbertville.
Dunkerton will host Northeast Hamilton in a Varsity doubleheader, on Wednesday, June 11, at Dunkerton. One game is a make-up game of an earlier rainout.
On Friday, June 13, the Raiders play at Janesville, in another conference game. |
