Ayr Hosfield came into the tournament with a 40-1 record, and he proved too much for Kayser to handle. In the Consolation Bracket first round, Kayser won a high scoring 10-7 decision over Quinn Wilson of Riverside (Oaklan) at 171 lbs. Wilson led 6-5 after two periods. However, Kayser recorded an escape, and two takedowns in the third period for the win. Wilson did score a point on a late escape. On Friday, Kayser was trailing Mitch Schultz of Postville 8-2 in the third period, when he scored on a takedown with 55 seconds left. Kyle still trailed 9-6 when he surprised Schultz with a pin at 5:54 of third period. There was great jubilation on the Jesup coaches bench after the fall. Taylor Kettman of Don Bosco then won a 5-0 decision over Kayser in the Consolation Semi-Finals on Friday night. Beau Westpfahl (103) and Colton Weber (119) both wrestled for Jesup also at the state meet, as they were qualifiers. Both boys lost their first round matches as well. Beau lost a 6-4 decision to Brennan McNitt of Council Bluffs St. Albert in the first round match on Wednesday afternoon. There was no scoring in the third period. Beau came back in the Consolation Bracket first round, to win a 4-3 decision over Zakk Buch of Belle Plaine. Beau won the match on a third period reversal. Hinschberger got an early takedown in the first period for a 2-0 lead, and made that lead stand up for the remainder of the match. He rode Weber hard both on his feet and on the mat for the win. Colton came back in the Consolation First Round to take a 4-2 decision over Chad O’Brecht of Riverside (Oakland). Weber scored takedowns in the first and second period, and O’Brecht had a takedown late in the second period after a timeout. There was no scoring in the third period. On Thursday, Colton lost a 6-4 decision to Jon Swofford of New London/Winfield-Mt Union, in the Consolation second round.Weber was eliminated from any further competition with his two losses at state. He was not a place winner. Jesup Head Coach Brent Meyers said, “I thought it was a good tournament. I thought we could have done a little bit better. But then again, the competition is tough at the state level, and anything can happen.” State place winners have been hard to come by for the Jesup wrestlers in the last few years. Kyle Kayser joins Aaron Dunkelberger 2005 (7th), Brett Vogel 2001 (6th), and Darren Youngblut 1995 (2nd) in recent years as place winners. Coach Meyers concluded, “It’s been since 2001 since we took three wrestlers to state from Jesup. I was real happy to see Beau, Colton, and Kyle qualify for the state tournament.” He added, “Beau Westpfahl is a sophomore, and he has a good chance of going to Des Moines next year.” |
